Colored Pencil and Gouache on black paper
7" x 12"
"Darkness Surrounds" is a color pencil drawing on black paper that depicts the errors that we make regarding our phone every day. Whenever there is a break in the conversation, the first instinct for many people is to look at their phones instead of engaging with their real-world surroundings. People of all generations are slowly getting pulled into the blue light of the screens, from televisions to apple watches. Even though this is a large scale issue among our society, each time someone picks up their phone, it is a personal choice, and each of us is individually subjecting ourselves to being controlled by society. The focal point of the piece is the dark silhouette of a girl holding an iPhone with her face being illuminated by the screen. Orbiting around the back of the phone is a vortex depicted with blue dashes resembling the blue light from our phone screens. This vortex is capturing and enticing the girl to travel further into the realm of technology. The reflection of the phone screen in the girl's glasses is a depiction of my other piece, "Wild Child Trapped," which references a similar error involving phones in our society.
