comfortable in the uncomfortable
Conte crayon on sanded down paper

"Comfortable in the Uncomfortable" is a portrait of my struggle with depersonalization and derealization (DPDR). My DPDR truly began after a sunglass arm punctured my eardrum, which was the tipping point after past traumas. This means that I am only able to understand my bodily position when I am in unstable situations, or when I do art. "Comfortable in the Uncomfortable" piece was created from other pieces that I sanded down to create a toned gray paper, and it attempts to capture this struggle of continually feeling unstable. The lightning bolt striking my eardrum shows the comfort I've learned to find in all situations, regardless of how uncomfortable I feel in any given moment.
